If you're visiting, it's tempting to buy iPhone 18 Pro in Korea while you're here. Korea was in the first launch wave on September 18, 2026 Confirmed, and the Apple Stores in Seoul and Busan are easy to walk into. The short answer from someone who sells iPhones here: it's rarely cheaper than the US, and the Korean model has quirks you should know about first.

We run five phone stores in Busan and Changwon. We've laid out the Korean prices, the US prices and the tax refund rules side by side, so you can decide in a few minutes instead of at the Apple Store counter.

How much does it cost to buy iPhone 18 Pro in Korea vs the US?

Korean prices include 10% VAT. US prices on Apple's site don't include sales tax, which runs from 0% to around 10% depending on the state. The middle column shows the best case, where you get every won of VAT back. In practice you won't.

How much does it cost to buy iPhone 18 Pro in Korea vs the US?
Model · storageKorea (incl. VAT)Korea, VAT fully removedUS (before sales tax)
18 Pro · 256GB₩1,990,000 ≈ $1,421≈ $1,292$1,199
18 Pro · 512GB₩2,290,000 ≈ $1,636≈ $1,487$1,399
18 Pro · 1TB₩2,890,000 ≈ $2,064≈ $1,877$1,799
18 Pro Max · 256GB₩2,190,000 ≈ $1,564≈ $1,422$1,299
18 Pro Max · 512GB₩2,490,000 ≈ $1,779≈ $1,617$1,499
18 Pro Max · 1TB₩3,090,000 ≈ $2,207≈ $2,006$1,899

Korean prices are Apple Korea's official figures Confirmed. Dollar figures use ₩1,400 = $1. Even in the best case, Korea comes out about $80–$125 above the US pre-tax price on every configuration. Compare against a high-tax US state at 8–10% and the two get close. That's still only true if you recover all of the VAT, which the refund system doesn't give you.

Korean prices also rose ₩200,000 over the iPhone 17 Pro at 256GB and 512GB, and ₩400,000 at 1TB Confirmed. That's part of why the gap with the US is wider this year.

How does the tourist tax refund work at an Apple Store in Korea?

Apple's Korean support information, as quoted on Apple's Korean community forum, says two things. Shoppers who qualify for Korea's tourist tax refund program can get a VAT refund when they buy in person at an Apple Store. Products ordered through the Apple Online Store, including orders picked up in store, are not eligible.

What to expect at the counter:

  1. Bring your passport. Refunds are for short-term visitors. If you hold a Korean residence card (ARC), you generally don't qualify.
  2. Ask before you pay. One reply on Apple's Korean forum says eligibility can differ by store and by product. In that thread, a Vision Pro bought at the Gangnam store didn't qualify. Treat that as a reason to ask, not a rule.
  3. Expect less than 10% back. Refund operators take a fee, so the amount you get is below the full VAT. Ask the store for the exact figure on your receipt.
  4. Claim before you fly out. Refunds are processed at departure. Keep the phone in your carry-on in case customs asks to see it.

If you're short on time, the refund alone won't close the price gap. It only narrows it.

What catches come with a Korean iPhone 18 Pro?

This is the part that's easy to miss. A phone bought in Korea is a Korean-market model (part numbers ending in KH/A). It's not a US or global model, and three differences matter:

What catches come with a Korean iPhone 18 Pro?
DifferenceKorean modelUS model
Camera shutter soundAlways plays, even in Silent modeFollows Silent mode
SIMnano-SIM + eSIM (physical tray) ConfirmedeSIM only, no tray Confirmed
Satellite featuresNone listed on Apple Korea's spec page ConfirmedIncluded, 2 years free Confirmed
Video playback (18 Pro)Up to 34 hours ConfirmedUp to 36 hours Confirmed

The shutter sound can be a deal-breaker. Owners on Apple's community forums consistently report there's no setting to turn it off. The Korean vs US model comparison covers each difference in detail, including how cellular bands and the 5G modem compare.

Can I get a carrier deal on an iPhone 18 Pro as a visitor?

Usually not. Korean carrier discounts are tied to a Korean postpaid plan, typically 24 months. That plan needs Korean identification: a resident registration number, or an Alien Registration Card for foreign residents. A tourist visa won't get you there, so visitors end up buying the unlocked phone at full price.

Unlocked iPhones are sold at Apple Stores and at large electronics chains. Tax refund handling depends on the store, so if the refund is part of your math, the Apple Store is the more predictable place to buy.

What about the warranty once I take it home?

Apple's warranty terms allow Apple to restrict iPhone service to the country where the phone was originally sold. In practice many repairs are handled abroad, but there's no guarantee. Read the Apple warranty terms for your country before you count on a local repair. AppleCare+ availability also depends on the country of purchase.

Customs is the other cost people forget. US residents returning home have an $800 personal exemption. A single iPhone 18 Pro fits under it, but two phones or a phone plus other shopping may not, and you need to declare anything above the limit.

So when does it make sense to buy iPhone 18 Pro in Korea?

Based on the numbers above, it makes sense in a few situations:

  • You need a phone now. Lost, broken or stolen during the trip, and waiting isn't an option
  • You want a physical SIM tray and live in an eSIM-only country. The US, Canada, Japan, Mexico and several Gulf countries sell eSIM-only Pro models. A Korean model keeps the tray. Remember the shutter sound comes with it
  • You live where the iPhone is more expensive than in Korea. Then the tax-refunded Korean price can come out ahead. Check your local price first

If you're coming from the US just to save money, the math doesn't work. Buy at home and spend the difference on a fast charger instead. Our iPhone 18 Pro AVS charger test roundup shows which one actually matters, since there's no adapter in the box in either country.
